Determining whether cochlear implant is the best solution for someone requires a detailed evaluation process by multiple professionals, which can be briefly summarized in the following steps:

• A complete diagnostic Audiological evaluation to determine the type and severity of hearing loss. This also includes speech perception testing with appropriately fitted hearing aids, in order to rule out hearing aids as an adequate amplification option.
• Evaluation of current speech and language skills or any alternative mode of communication being used by the child, by a speech & language therapist.
• Review by an Otolaryngologist/ENT surgeon to determine the status of the external and middle ear and also to determine fitness for CI surgery based on other medical evaluation results.
• Medical evaluation includes comprehensive radiological evaluation (CT scan and MRI) to check the anatomy of the inner ear structures and the auditory nerve.
• Pediatrician’s review of general health and any conditions contraindicating surgery or that may affect prognosis
• Psychologist’s assessment of child’s cognitive development and any behavioral conditions that may affect prognosis.
